Irish Republican Socialist
Republicanism and Socialism in Ireland looks at the history of radical ideas in the period between democratic republicanism at the end of the eighteenth century and the 1916 Rising. It tells the story of the Irish freedom struggle, from the United Irishmen through the Young Ireland, Fenian and Land League movements of the nineteenth century to the socialist activities of James Connolly at the beginning of the twentieth century. It shows that Connolly's socialism cannot be isolated from republicanism and its tradition, that his life and work are the culminating point in the history of republicanism and socialism in Ireland.
